The different types of visas
Each visa type corresponds to a purpose of stay. Here are the main ones you'll encounter.
Tourism
The most common. Allows you to visit a country for a limited period (usually 30 to 90 days). Often no formalities required for European passports.
Business
For professional travel: meetings, conferences, negotiations. Generally does not allow you to work on site.
Transit
Required in some countries during a layover of more than a few hours. Very short duration (24 to 72 hours).
Student
For study abroad or university exchanges. Requires proof of enrolment and often proof of funds.
Working Holiday
The WHV (Working Holiday Visa) allows you to travel and work in a partner country for 1 to 2 years. Reserved for ages 18-35.
