Turkmenistan is one of the safest countries there is when it comes to street crime: an ultra-surveilled police state, petty crime is nearly nonexistent. The real difficulties are elsewhere — a closed authoritarian regime, difficult visa, mandatory guide, surveillance, forbidden zones and photo restrictions.

Drinking water
Never drink tap water: only sealed bottled water, even for brushing your teeth.
Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes present in summer in wetlands and oases, but no active malaria. Extreme desert heat = main risk (dehydration, heatstroke).
General notes
Système de santé faible et opaque, hôpitaux mal équipés hors d'Achgabat. Souscris impérativement une assurance couvrant l'évacuation médicale, car un rapatriement peut être nécessaire. Emporte tes médicaments personnels.
Women travelers
Low risk of violence, but a very conservative society: covering dress and reserved behavior strongly advised, especially outside Ashgabat. Women traveling alone are rare and may attract attention. The mandatory guide is reassuring on the logistical side.
LGBTQ+ travelers
Relations between men are illegal and punishable by fine, detention or prison. Extremely hostile society and a total absence of legal protection. Absolute discretion essential: no public displays, including in Ashgabat.
