Drinking water
Tap water not drinkable. Drink bottled or filtered water.
Mosquitoes
Dengue is endemic (peak in the rainy season, Nov-Apr) and malaria is present, especially in rural areas. Repellent, mosquito net and prophylaxis to consider.
General notes
Medical infrastructure is very limited, including Dili's national hospital. Any serious emergency requires evacuation to Darwin or Bali: travel insurance with evacuation is essential.
Women travelers
Overall safe for women traveling alone; warm welcome. Rather covering dress appreciated, standard caution in the evening in Dili.
LGBTQ+ travelers
Homosexuality legal (never criminalized) and a Pride March has existed in Dili since 2017, but a conservative, Catholic society: discretion recommended outside the capital.
