Safety Tajikistan
Vigilance conseillee
Tajikistan is safe and welcoming in the west and in Dushanbe. The real challenges are elsewhere: mandatory permit for the Pamir, sensitive Afghan border, difficult mountain roads and altitude, more than crime.

Areas to avoid
- The 10 km along the border with Afghanistan (terrorism, cross-border incidents): Darvoz, Khatlon, the Wakhan valley on the river side
- The Pamir (GBAO) without a valid GBAO permit: strict controls, turn-backs and fines at checkpoints
- The Rasht and Vakhsh valleys: residual risk of mines and unexploded ordnance off the paved roads
- High mountain passes in bad weather: rockfalls, avalanches, washed-out tracks

Health & precautions
Vaccinations
- None required
- Recommended: hepatitis A and B, typhoid, rabies for long treks
- DTaP and MMR up to date
Drinking water
Don't drink tap water, even in Dushanbe. Bottled or filtered water, especially in the mountains.
Mosquitoes
Very low, residual malaria risk in the south-west (lower valley) in summer. No major threat elsewhere.
General notes
Real and serious altitude sickness on the Pamir (Murghab 3650 m, passes at 4000-4655 m): ascend gradually, hydrate, don't ignore symptoms. Decent medical facilities in Dushanbe, very basic in the Pamir. Repatriation insurance (with high-altitude coverage) essential.
Women travelers
Overall safe for women travelers traveling solo with the usual precautions. Conservative Muslim society: modest dress appreciated, especially outside Dushanbe. Warm welcome in the mountain homestays.
LGBTQ+ travelers
Societe tres conservatrice. L'homosexualite est legale mais taboue et mal vue. Discretion fortement recommandee partout.
