Health & precautions

Vaccinations

  • None required
  • Tick-borne encephalitis vaccine advised for hiking in forests and mountains

Drinking water

Tap water drinkable and often of excellent quality thanks to natural springs.

Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes in summer near wetlands, no tropical disease. Ticks present in forest and mountains: wear covering clothing.

General notes

Decent healthcare. The European Health Insurance Card is valid. Repatriation insurance recommended for high-mountain hiking.

Women travelers

Very safe for women traveling alone: reliable transport and low street harassment. Standard precautions at night.

LGBTQ+ travelers

Tolerant atmosphere in Bratislava and Košice, more conservative in rural areas. Physical safety remains high, but same-sex marriage and adoption are not recognised.
