Areas to avoid
- The border with Yemen (southwest Dhofar) not advised.
- The wadis in rainy weather: deadly flash floods, never enter them if rain is forecast.
- Off-road driving in the desert without a 4x4, guide or water reserves.

Drinking water
Tap water drinkable in town but most prefer bottled water for drinking; bottled advised in rural areas.
Mosquitoes
Few mosquitoes; no malaria. Very low risk, light protection is enough, especially in the humid south during the khareef.
General notes
A good private healthcare system in Muscat, more limited in remote regions. Travel insurance with repatriation strongly recommended for treks and the desert. Heatstroke and dehydration are the real dangers in summer.
Women travelers
Tres sur pour les voyageuses, y compris en solo : harcelement rare, Omanais respectueux. Tenue couvrant epaules et genoux appreciee. Attention : les lois penalisent les relations hors mariage, ce qui complique un depot de plainte pour agression.
LGBTQ+ travelers
A repressive legal framework: same-sex relationships are illegal. Total discretion required in public, no displays of affection. No recognition of gender identities.
