Health & precautions

Vaccinations

  • None required
  • Up-to-date routine vaccines recommended

Drinking water

Tap water drinkable in the cities (Skopje, Ohrid). In rural areas, prefer bottled water as a precaution.

Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes in summer near Lake Ohrid, annoying but with no tropical diseases.

General notes

Decent healthcare in big cities, more limited in rural areas. The European Health Insurance Card is not valid (non-EU): plan for travel insurance.

Women travelers

Generally safe for women travellers. Verbal harassment possible in nightlife areas; standard vigilance at night on isolated streets.

LGBTQ+ travelers

Homosexuality is legal but society remains conservative and there is no recognized civil union. Discretion is advised in public outside Skopje's LGBTQ+ circles.
