Safety Lebanon

4/5

Risques importants

Lebanon is going through an unstable period. A fragile ceasefire has framed Hezbollah-Israel hostilities since late 2024, but sporadic strikes and clashes persist in the south, the Bekaa and Beirut's southern suburbs (Dahieh). Nearly all governments (including France's Quai d'Orsay) formally advise against travel or part of the country. Ordinary crime against tourists remains low; the real risk is security and geopolitical.

Health & precautions

Vaccinations

  • None required
  • Recommended: hepatitis A and B, typhoid, tetanus and measles up to date

Drinking water

Don't drink tap water: drink bottled water, which is very widely available.

Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes present in summer on the coast, no malaria. Insect-borne disease risk negligible.

General notes

Good private clinics in Beirut but a health system weakened by the economic crisis (medicine shortages, power cuts). Travel insurance with repatriation is ESSENTIAL; check that it covers the areas advised against.

Women travelers

Lebanon is fairly safe for women travelers regarding crime. Occasional street harassment (stares, remarks): more covering dress outside Beirut's cosmopolitan neighborhoods, sit confidently in taxis. Beirut is one of the most liberal cities in the region.

LGBTQ+ travelers

Article 534 of the penal code can be invoked against homosexual relations and the climate has hardened in recent years. Beirut keeps a discreet scene but no public displays of affection: be cautious.
