Drinking water
Don't drink tap water, even in Bishkek (aging Soviet-era pipes). Bottled or filtered water.
Mosquitoes
No malaria. Mosquitoes around the lakes in summer, but no major tropical disease.
General notes
Real altitude sickness above 3000 m (Song-Kol, Ala-Kul, Tash-Rabat): ascend gradually, hydrate. Decent medical facilities in Bishkek, basic elsewhere. Repatriation insurance strongly advised.
Women travelers
Overall safe for women traveling solo with the usual precautions. Modest dress appreciated, watch out for 'ala kachuu' (bride kidnapping) which remains a rare but real rural phenomenon worth knowing about.
LGBTQ+ travelers
Societe conservatrice. L'homosexualite est legale mais peu acceptee socialement. Discretion recommandee, surtout hors de Bichkek.
