Areas to avoid

  • No dangerous areas. Pickpocket caution around the Stephansdom, Karlsplatz and in the Vienna metro at rush hour
  • In the mountains, don't go off-piste without a guide in winter (avalanche risk)

  • Tick-borne encephalitis vaccine (TBE) advised for forest hiking in spring/summer

Drinking water

Excellent, drinkable tap water everywhere, sourced from mountain springs.

Mosquitoes

Present near lakes in summer, with no disease risk. Watch out for ticks in forests and meadows (FSME).

General notes

Very high-quality healthcare. The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is valid. General emergency number 112, ambulance 144.

Women travelers

Very safe, including solo and at night in cities. Standard vigilance in party districts.

LGBTQ+ travelers

A progressive and welcoming country, marriage equality since 2019. Vienna has an active LGBTQ+ scene (Regenbogenparade). Somewhat more conservative in rural Alpine areas.
