Turkmen manat

Économie quasi exclusivement en espèces. Les cartes étrangères sont très rarement acceptées et souvent hors service. Arrive avec des dollars ou euros en billets neufs et propres.

A few ATMs in Ashgabat, unreliable for foreign cards and locked to the unfavourable official rate. All but non-existent outside the capital.

Exchange is officially done at the bank at the fixed rate (~3.5 TMT/USD). Beware: a black market exists at a much more favorable rate (often 5 to 6 times more manats), but it's illegal, risky and cracked down on — never touch it without your guide.
