Cash vs Carte
A de facto DOLLARIZED economy since the 2019 collapse: US DOLLARS IN CASH are the real everyday currency. The Lebanese pound (LBP) is still used for small purchases but has collapsed (from 1,507 to about 89,500 LBP for 1 USD). Come with USD cash in small denominations: hotels, restaurants, taxis, sites, everything is paid in dollar cash. Bank cards are accepted only in a minority of establishments.
Distributeurs (ATM)
ATM network weakened by the banking crisis: machines often empty, out of service or capped. Don't rely on them.
Frais typiques
High fees and unfavorable rates. Limited withdrawals. Far better to bring USD cash from abroad.
Ou changer son argent
Licensed exchange offices in Beirut (Hamra, downtown) for USD. Avoid street changers and always check the posted LBP-USD rate.
Pourboires
Tipping expected at restaurants and for services; check whether the 10% service charge is already on the bill.
Prix typiques
Arnaques a eviter
- !Taux de change LBP-USD trafique par certains commercants
- !Change given in very worn or counterfeit bills

Paiements digitaux
Mobile and contactless payments very rare because of the banking crisis. Apple Pay / Google Pay rarely usable. Bring cash.
