Cash vs Carte
WARNING: Iran is a 100% CASH economy for foreigners. Because of international sanctions, NO foreign card (Visa, Mastercard, Amex) works — not in shops, not in restaurants, not at ATMs. You must bring your ENTIRE budget in fresh, clean EUR or USD notes and change them locally. The only alternative: order a local tourist debit card (Mah Card, Iran Tourist Card) and top it up on arrival.
Distributeurs (ATM)
Plenty of ATMs BUT unusable with a foreign card: they only accept Iranian bank cards.
Frais typiques
Sans objet : impossible de retirer avec une carte etrangere. Zero acces au reseau bancaire international (pas de SWIFT/Visa).
Ou changer son argent
Licensed exchange offices (sarrafi) and bazaars, at the free-market rate (far more favourable than the official rate). Check the day's rate on Bonbast before changing.
Pourboires
No obligation, but rounding up is appreciated.
Prix typiques
Arnaques a eviter
- !Rial/toman confusion to overcharge you 10x — remember that 1 toman = 10 rials
- !Fake officials demanding to see your currency: never hand over your cash
- !Foreign notes refused because they're slightly damaged: bring only pristine bills
Paiements digitaux
Apple Pay / Google Pay don't exist for foreigners. Iranians use local cards and apps (Snapp Pay), which you can't access without an Iranian account. The traveller's only cashless option: a local tourist debit card.
