Cash vs Carte

Cash is king, in manats for local spending and in dollars/euros for the essentials. Foreign cards (Visa/Mastercard) are very rarely accepted and often out of service: never count on them.

Pourboires

Not part of local culture. A 5-10% tip is appreciated in Ashgabat's tourist restaurants; you generally thank your guide and driver at the end of the tour.

DAB / Distributeurs

ATMs in Ashgabat but unreliable for foreign cards and locked at the official rate. Withdraw the minimum and don't count on them: arrive with enough cash in hard currency.

Astuces

  • •The real budget depends on the rate: at the official rate (3.5 TMT/USD) everything looks expensive, at the black-market rate (often 5 to 6 times more, ~19-25 TMT/USD) the country becomes very cheap.
  • •The heaviest expense isn't living on-site but the mandatory guide + tour package: budget 80-150 EUR/day all in through a licensed agency.
  • •Un repas complet dans une cantine locale (plov, thé, pain) revient à 20-50 TMT, une misère si tu paies au taux non officiel.
  • •Bring dollars or euros in fresh, unfolded cash: they're used for everything, as foreign cards are almost useless.

Devise : Turkmen manat (TMT)

  • •The manat is not internationally convertible: impossible to buy before departure, and nearly unsellable when leaving. Only change the strict minimum.
  • •Taux officiel figé à ~3,5 TMT pour 1 USD depuis des années ; le taux du marché noir a longtemps oscillé entre 19 et 40 TMT/USD selon les crises. L'écart est énorme et illégal à exploiter.
  • •Parallel exchange is risky and cracked down on: never venture into it without your guide, and know that it is officially forbidden.
  • •ATMs give manats at the disadvantageous official rate, when they work for foreign cards — which is rare.

Arnaques courantes

  • ⚠Exchange at the official rate imposed on tourists at hotels and banks: you lose a lot compared with the real market rate.
  • ⚠Taxis de l'aéroport d'Achgabat qui gonflent le prix : conviens du tarif avant de monter.
  • ⚠Unlicensed guides or middlemen who promise an 'easy' visa — the visa must go through a licensed agency and the migration service.
  • ⚠Fake bills or out-of-use notes given as change on large bills.
