Cash vs Carte
Cash is king everywhere. Cards are accepted only at a few upscale hotels and restaurants in Dili. Outside the capital, everything is paid in cash.
Pourboires
No tipping culture. Not expected; rounding up in tourist restaurants is appreciated.
DAB / Distributeurs
ATMs (BNU, BNCTL, Mandiri) in Dili and Baucau only. Withdraw enough cash before you leave to explore the interior or the islands: there are no ATMs anywhere else.
Astuces
- •The country uses the US dollar (USD): bring bills in good condition, damaged notes are often refused
- •Mikrolets (Dili's urban minibuses) cost 0.25 USD per trip, the cheapest transport in the country
- •Eating at warungs and local eateries runs 1-3 USD for a full meal
- •The big budget line is diving at Atauro (day trip ~90-130 USD): it remains the main draw, budget it separately

- •Official currency = US dollar (USD). Local coins (centavos) circulate for small change
- •About 1 USD = 0.92 EUR (i.e. ~1.09 USD for 1 EUR) in 2025-2026
- •Withdraw your dollars at the ATMs in Dili or Baucau: these are the only towns with reliable ATMs
