Cash vs Carte
Cash is king everywhere. Cards work only at a few hotels and supermarkets in Dushanbe. Outside the capital, everything is paid in cash.
Pourboires
Not required. Round up or 5-10% in Dushanbe's tourist restaurants.
DAB / Distributeurs
ATMs (Amonatbank, Eskhata, Orienbank) in Dushanbe, Khujand and Khorog. Rare elsewhere, absent on the Pamir Highway: withdraw before you leave.

- •The real expense is the 4x4 transport in the Pamir: sharing the car among 4 splits the bill
- •META and PECTA (Khorog) network homestays are reliable: 8-15 EUR/night with meals
- •Eat at the chaikhanas and canteens (oshkhona): a plov or a lagman for 2-4 EUR
- •Bring cash in somoni AND some US dollars: nothing can be withdrawn in the Pamir

- •Easy exchange at the offices (obmen) in Dushanbe and Khujand, posted rates
- •Bring US dollars or euros in good, clean bills: the best rate is at the exchange
- •Stock up on somoni before heading into the Pamir: ATMs there are nearly nonexistent
