Conseils argent
Cash vs Carte
Card accepted almost everywhere, including small amounts. A bit of cash is useful for mountain fondue fountains and markets
Pourboires
Service is included. You simply round up or leave 5-10% for good service, never obligatory
DAB / Distributeurs
Bancomat ATMs everywhere. Your bank may charge fees outside the eurozone: check beforehand, or use a card like Revolut/Wise
Astuces
- •Switzerland is one of the most expensive countries in the world: a dorm bed runs around 40-55 CHF, a restaurant dish 25-45 CHF
- •Shopping at Coop and Migros (often with a cheap food corner) brings the food budget down to 20-35 CHF/day
- •The Half Fare Card (120 CHF/month) halves all train, bus and boat tickets: worth it from 3-4 days of travel
- •Water from public fountains is drinkable everywhere: no need to buy bottled water
- •Many of the finest activities (hiking, lakes, old towns) are free
Devise : Swiss franc (CHF)
- •Switzerland is NOT in the eurozone: the currency is the Swiss franc (CHF), roughly 1 CHF = 1.07 EUR
- •Many shops accept euros but give change in CHF at an unfavourable rate: better to pay in CHF
- •Withdrawing directly from an ATM gives a better rate than the station exchange bureaux
Arnaques courantes
- ⚠Few scams: Switzerland is very honest. Watch out mainly for inflated bills at a few touristy station bars
- ⚠Occasional pickpockets at Zurich and Geneva stations and on crowded trains in high season
