Conseils argent

Cash vs Carte

The UK is nearly cashless: card and contactless work everywhere, even for 1 GBP. Cash is becoming rare.

Pourboires

Tipping is not mandatory. 10-12.5% at the restaurant if service isn't already included. Nothing at the pub when ordering at the counter.

DAB / Distributeurs

Cash machines everywhere. The banks' 'free ATMs' are free; avoid private fee-charging machines.

Astuces

  • The supermarket meal deals (Tesco, Boots, Sainsbury's) at 3-4 GBP are the most economical lunch
  • Many major national museums are free: British Museum, National Gallery, Tate Modern, Natural History Museum
  • Get a railcard (30 GBP/year) if you're taking several trains: a third off most tickets
  • The Megabus and National Express coaches link the cities for 5-25 GBP, much cheaper than the train
  • London is markedly more expensive than the rest of the country: accommodation 20-30% higher

Devise : Pound sterling (GBP)

  • The pound sterling is not the euro: reckon around 1 GBP = 1.17 EUR (mid-2026)
  • Avoid airport currency exchange offices, with very unfavourable rates
  • Pay directly in pounds with your card rather than accepting euro conversion (DCC), which is always a losing deal

Arnaques courantes

  • Aggressive fake charity collectors on Oxford Street and Leicester Square
  • Private (non-bank) cash machines with high fees in tourist areas
  • Tourist restaurants adding a 12.5% 'service charge' that's already included and they try to charge twice
