Cash vs Carte
Card accepted almost everywhere in Prague and the cities, including small amounts and contactless. Keep a bit of cash for small village pubs, markets and public toilets
Pourboires
Service isn't included: you usually leave 10% (rounding up). You state the total amount when paying rather than leaving the coins on the table
DAB / Distributeurs
Bankomat ATMs everywhere. Avoid the orange Euronet ones (high fees): favour the Czech banks' ATMs. Your bank may charge fees outside the eurozone, so check or use a card like Revolut/Wise
Astuces
- •The Czech Republic remains one of the cheapest destinations in Central Europe: a dorm bed in Prague runs around 12-20 EUR, a half-litre of beer at a local pub 45-70 CZK (2-3 EUR)
- •Outside Prague (Brno, Olomouc, Český Krumlov), prices drop a further 20-30%: accommodation, restaurants and beer more affordable
- •The 'polední menu' (lunchtime menu) at local restaurants offers a main + soup for 150-220 CZK: the best value of the day
- •Many activities are free or cheap: strolling Charles Bridge, the Petřín gardens, the UNESCO-listed old towns
- •The 24h/72h Prague transport pass (120/330 CZK) works out much cheaper than single tickets
Devise : Czech koruna (CZK)
- •The Czech Republic is NOT in the eurozone: the currency is the Czech koruna (CZK), roughly 1 EUR = 24-25 CZK (1 CZK ≈ 0.04 EUR)
- •Absolutely avoid the currency exchange offices in the tourist center; withdrawing directly from a real bank ATM (ČSOB, KB, Česká spořitelna) gives the best rate
- •Many shops accept euros but give change in CZK at an unfavourable rate: better to pay in CZK
- •Refuse 'dynamic currency conversion' (DCC) at the ATM or by card: always choose to be charged in CZK
Arnaques courantes
- ⚠Exchange bureaux in central Prague (Wenceslas, Old Town) with terrible rates and fake '0% commission': never change money there
- ⚠Unofficial taxis around the station and airport that inflate the fare: prefer Bolt/Uber or a booked taxi
- ⚠Inflated bills and overcharged 'covers' at a few very touristy restaurants around the Old Town Square
- ⚠Fake plainclothes police asking to 'check' your notes or wallet: demand ID and never hand over your money
