Cash vs Carte
Cards accepted almost everywhere, including in Karwa taxis. Keep cash for cafeterias, souks and tips.
Pourboires
Not required. 10% at restaurants if service isn't included, a few riyals for porters and drivers.
DAB / Distributeurs
ATMs everywhere (malls, metro, airport, QNB/Doha Bank banks). Fees possible of 15-25 QAR depending on the bank.
Astuces
- •Neighborhood cafeterias (Al Najada, Msheireb, Industrial Area) serve machboos, biryani and shawarma for 15-30 QAR
- •Doha's metro is ridiculously cheap: 2 QAR per trip in standard class with the Travel Card
- •Un karak (the au lait epice) coute 1-3 QAR au coin de rue, le carburant national
- •Tap water is desalinated and drinkable, but almost everyone drinks bottled: buy a pack at Lulu or Carrefour
Devise : Qatari riyal (QAR)
- •1 EUR is worth about 4.1 QAR; the riyal is pegged to the US dollar (1 USD = 3.64 QAR), so it's very stable
- •Change at the offices in Souq Waqif or the malls (Al Dar, City Exchange): better rates than the airport
- •Withdraw straight in riyals at the ATM and decline the dynamic conversion (DCC) offered on screen
Arnaques courantes
- ⚠Unofficial taxi drivers at the airport or near the malls who refuse the meter: take an official Karwa or Uber/Careem
- ⚠Fake desert-safari operators at cut prices, with no insurance or roadworthy 4x4: go through a recognized operator
- ⚠Service charge discreetly added at the bottom of the bill in hotel restaurants (10% + sometimes tax)
