Conseils argent

Cash vs Carte

Card accepted almost everywhere, including small shops and transport (contactless is king). Keep a bit of cash for milk bars and markets.

Pourboires

About 10% at restaurants if the service pleased you; note that saying 'thank you' as you hand over the money sometimes means 'keep the change'

DAB / Distributeurs

ATMs everywhere. Avoid Euronet (fees and poor rates) in favour of a bank ATM (PKO, Santander, mBank).

Astuces

  • Poland remains 30 to 40% cheaper than Western Europe: your budget goes a long way, especially outside Kraków's Old Town
  • The bar mleczny (milk bar), a working-class canteen inherited from communism, serves a full meal for 15-25 PLN (3-6 EUR)
  • The national museums often have one free day a week (Tuesday for many)
  • Shop at Biedronka or Lidl: a beer costs 3-4 PLN there versus 12-18 PLN in a bar

Devise : Zloty (PLN)

  • Poland is NOT in the eurozone: bring zloty, the euro is rarely accepted
  • Change money at a kantor (exchange bureau) in town rather than at the airport: the rates are far better
  • At the ATM, always refuse the offered conversion to euros (DCC): choose to be charged in PLN

Arnaques courantes

  • Scam bars (clip joints) around the Market Square in Kraków and Warsaw: touts invite you in, the bill explodes
  • Fake taxis at Warsaw Chopin airport or the station: always take an official taxi or Bolt/Uber
  • 'Commission-free' exchange bureaux downtown that apply a terrible rate
