Cash vs Carte

A largely cash country. Cards work in upmarket hotels and shopping malls in the big cities, but almost never in the North or at dhabas.

Pourboires

Tipping appreciated but not required: round up at restaurants, 100-200 PKR for a porter or a day guide

DAB / Distributeurs

ATMs available in the cities (HBL, UBL, Meezan). Rare and unreliable in the North: withdraw cash in Gilgit or before heading up into the valleys. Notify your bank, foreign cards are sometimes refused.

Astuces

  • Pakistan is among the cheapest countries in Asia: a month of slow travel runs around 1500-1600 EUR all in
  • Eating local is unbeatable: a full meal at a dhaba (eatery) often costs less than 2 EUR
  • In the North (Hunza, Skardu), family guesthouses are far cheaper than hotels and far warmer
  • Haggling is the norm for taxis, souvenirs and private cars with driver
  • Shared jeeps to reach remote valleys cost a fraction of a private rental

Devise : Pakistani rupee (PKR)

  • Change your euros at the licensed exchange offices (money changers) in the big cities, a better rate than a bank or the airport
  • 1 EUR is worth about 320-330 PKR (2025-2026)
  • Keep small bills: many shops have no change for large notes

Arnaques courantes

  • Taxi/rickshaw drivers who inflate the price for foreigners — use Careem or InDrive in town
  • Uncertified trek guides in the North
  • Tourist prices in the bazaars of Lahore and Peshawar — always haggle
  • Exchange offices at unfavourable rates at the airport
