Cash vs Carte

Card is king everywhere, even for a 30 NOK coffee or a bus. Many shops no longer accept cash at all.

Pourboires

Not mandatory, service included. Round up or 5-10% at the restaurant if the service was good.

DAB / Distributeurs

Minibank ATMs present in cities. Possible fees with some cards; favour a card with no foreign fees.

Astuces

  • Norway is one of the most expensive countries in Europe: self-catering at a hostel can cut your food budget threefold
  • The Rema 1000, Kiwi and Extra supermarkets are the cheapest; avoid the Joker stores and petrol-station shops
  • The pølse (hot-dog) from petrol stations or 7-Eleven is the cheapest hot meal in the country (35-50 NOK)
  • Alcohol is heavily taxed: a beer at a bar costs 100-140 NOK. Buy from Vinmonopolet (the state monopoly) for wine and spirits
  • Access to nature is free (allemannsretten, the right to roam): hikes, fjords and wild camping cost nothing

Devise : Norwegian krone (NOK)

  • Outside the eurozone: Norway uses the krone (NOK), about 11 NOK to 1 EUR in early 2026
  • No need to change cash before you go: the country is nearly cashless, pay for everything by card
  • Withdraw NOK from an ATM if needed rather than exchanging at a bureau de change (poor rates)

Arnaques courantes

  • Few scams: Norway is very honest. Watch out mainly for inflated tourist prices at restaurants in Bergen and near the fjords
  • Fjord excursions sold at a premium by middlemen — book directly via Fjord Tours or Entur
  • Pickpockets are rare but present in summer around Karl Johans gate in Oslo and at stations
