Conseils argent

Cash vs Carte

Cards accepted at hotels, restaurants and supermarkets in Ulaanbaatar (Visa/Mastercard), but tugrik cash is essential the moment you leave the capital: yurts, village guanz, park admissions, petrol

Pourboires

Not part of Mongolian tradition. 5-10% appreciated in Ulaanbaatar's tourist restaurants; a tip for the driver-guide at the end of the tour is common

DAB / Distributeurs

Plenty of ATMs in Ulaanbaatar (Khan Bank, Golomt, TDB) and in the provincial capitals. Fees possible on your foreign bank's side. Withdraw generously before leaving the cities

Astuces

  • Ulaanbaatar is expensive by Mongolian standards, but the moment you leave the capital accommodation plummets (yurt night 15-40 EUR) — on the other hand transport and 4x4 tours climb fast
  • Sharing a Gobi or steppe tour among 4-6 travellers splits the cost of the 4x4 driver-guide (approx. 60 EUR/day for the vehicle + fuel to share)
  • Eat at the guanz (popular canteens): a hearty plate of buuz or tsuivan for 2-4 EUR
  • The tugrik has depreciated against the euro in recent years: the country remains very affordable once you're there

Devise : Tugrik (MNT)

  • Change euros and dollars at Golomt Bank, Khan Bank or the offices at the State Department Store: good rates, avoid the airport
  • Vérifier le taux du jour (env. 1 EUR = 4000 MNT en 2026) avant de changer
  • Stock up on cash in Ulaanbaatar before heading to the steppe or the Gobi: no more ATMs beyond the provincial capitals

Arnaques courantes

  • Pickpockets at the State Department Store, the Narantuul black market and on buses 7 and 11 in Ulaanbaatar, especially during Naadam
  • Fake policemen around Sükhbaatar Square asking for passport and wallet
  • Taxis informels 'partagés' qui gonflent le prix ou détournent le trajet le soir
