Conseils argent

Cash vs Carte

Cards very well accepted at resorts and hotels. On the local islands, cash (USD or MVR) for cafés, grocery shops and small businesses.

Pourboires

Tipping appreciated but not required. Resorts often add 10% service. 1-5 USD for island-resort staff is common.

DAB / Distributeurs

ATMs in Male, at Velana airport and on the large local islands (Maafushi). Rare or nonexistent on the small islands: withdraw before you leave.

Astuces

  • Two Maldives coexist: local-island guesthouses (Maafushi, Thulusdhoo) from 30-60 EUR a night, versus 300-2000 EUR for a resort island. The budget varies twentyfold
  • Sur les iles locales, tout se paie en USD ou MVR ; garde des dollars en petites coupures, largement acceptes
  • Excursions (snorkeling with manta rays, whale sharks, dolphins) cost 25-60 USD per trip from a guesthouse, versus much steeper resort rates
  • Watch out for the green tax and the 10-12% service charge added to the bill at resorts, often not included in the advertised price
  • The airport transfer is the big hidden expense: seaplane 400-800 USD round trip, speedboat 100-490 USD, public ferry only 1-5 USD but slow and rare

Devise : Rufiyaa (MVR)

  • About 1 EUR = 17.8 MVR in 2025-2026 (i.e. ~0.056 EUR for 1 rufiyaa)
  • The US dollar (USD) is accepted everywhere, in resorts as on local islands: no need to change large sums into rufiyaa
  • The rufiyaa is mainly for small purchases on local islands (grocery, café, ferry). Keep the rest in USD for everything else

Arnaques courantes

  • Tres peu d'arnaques, pays sur. Le principal piege est le cout du transfert vers le resort, parfois non annonce clairement a la reservation
  • A few Malé shops inflate prices for tourists: haggle at the markets
  • Oversold whale-shark excursions: compare operators, some promise guaranteed sightings that are impossible to guarantee
