Cash dominates by far, especially outside the big cities and in the kafanas. Always keep some denars on you.
Pourboires
Round up or leave 10% at restaurants. Appreciated but not mandatory.
DAB / Distributeurs
ATMs everywhere in Skopje, Ohrid and Bitola. Frequent fees of 180-350 MKD per withdrawal depending on the bank.
Astuces
- •One of the cheapest countries in Europe: a full meal in a kafana costs 300-500 MKD (5-8 EUR)
- •Ohrid is pricier than Skopje in summer (July-August), book your accommodation in advance
- •The long-distance buses are very economical: Skopje-Ohrid for 500-700 MKD (8-12 EUR)
- •Withdraw large amounts at once to offset ATM fees, often 3-6 EUR per withdrawal
Devise : Macedonian denar (MKD)
- •The denar is de facto pegged to the euro around 61.5 MKD = 1 EUR, a very stable rate
- •The exchange bureaus (menuvačnica) offer better rates than the banks and charge no commission
- •Change your euros on the spot, no need to order denars before you leave
Arnaques courantes
- ⚠Taxis without a meter at Skopje airport that inflate the price — insist on the meter or fix the fare beforehand
- ⚠Incorrect change at small shops, especially with large notes
- ⚠Fake guides around Ohrid's old town offering overpriced tours
