Cash vs Carte
The most cashless country in Europe: cards work everywhere, even for a coffee or a tunnel toll. You can travel without a single krone in your pocket.
Pourboires
Tipping is neither expected nor customary: service is included. Nothing to add, even at a restaurant or in a taxi.
DAB / Distributeurs
Hraðbanki ATMs present in Reykjavík, Akureyri and at rural service stations. Not very useful given the card-only culture. Possible fees depending on your bank.
Astuces
- •Shop at Bónus (pink pig) or Krónan supermarkets: half the price of Netto or 10-11
- •Filling your bottle with tap water, perfectly drinkable and free everywhere, rather than buying bottled water (absurd here)
- •Cook for yourself: most guesthouses and hostels have a fitted kitchen, since a restaurant meal quickly runs to 30-40 EUR
- •Bathing in the free natural hot springs (Reykjadalur, Hrunalaug) rather than the Blue Lagoon (from ~65 EUR entry)
- •Getting the municipal geothermal pool pass: 5-8 EUR entry, a genuine local ritual
- •The hot-dog (pylsa) at Baejarins Beztu in Reykjavik remains the cheapest meal in the country (~5 EUR)

- •Outside the eurozone: 1 EUR is worth about 143 ISK (2025-2026)
- •No need to change cash in advance; Iceland runs almost cash-free
- •Pay directly in ISK by card, never accept the euro conversion offered at the terminal (unfavourable rate)

- ⚠Few scams, but hidden fees on car rentals (gravel insurance, ash, high deductible)
- ⚠The Blue Lagoon and some excursions are overhyped: compare with the free or municipal alternatives
