Cash vs Carte
A 100% cash economy for foreigners. No international bank card works. The only alternative: a local tourist debit card topped up on site.

No obligation. Rounding up the bill or 5-10% in a good restaurant is appreciated.
DAB / Distributeurs
Iranian ATMs accept NO foreign card. No point looking for a compatible ATM: withdrawing with your card is impossible.
Astuces
- •Bring 100% of your budget in cash — foreign cards (Visa/Mastercard) work NOWHERE because of the sanctions
- •Bring crisp, pristine EUR or USD notes (post-2013 series 100 USD bills), damaged notes are refused or discounted
- •Change at the bazaar or at an official exchange office: the free-market rate is far better than the official rate
- •Une carte de debit touristique rechargeable (Mah Card, Iran Tourist Card) permet de payer sans cash — a commander avant le depart
- •Prices are often quoted in tomans (1 toman = 10 rials): mentally divide by 10 to avoid confusion
