Conseils argent

Cash vs Carte

Card accepted almost everywhere, including small shops and transport. Keep a bit of cash for markets and public toilets.

Pourboires

A customary 10% tip at restaurants. Check that a service charge (szervízdíj) isn't already included.

DAB / Distributeurs

ATMs everywhere. Use the Hungarian banks (OTP, K&H, Erste) and decline the automatic conversion (DCC) offered on screen.

Astuces

  • Hungary keeps the forint (HUF): refuse to pay in euros, the rate applied by merchants is poor
  • A lunch menu (napi menü) at an étkezde runs around 2500-3500 HUF (6-9 €) for a starter + main
  • The Széchenyi and Gellért baths cost 12000-13000 HUF (~34 €): cheaper when booked online in advance
  • Outside Budapest (Eger, Pécs, Debrecen), everything is 20-30% cheaper

Devise : Forint (HUF)

  • Withdraw forint directly from an ATM rather than exchanging cash
  • Avoid Euronet (the orange ATMs) which apply abusive rates: prefer OTP, K&H, Erste
  • Change at downtown bureaux showing both buy AND sell rates, never at the airport

Arnaques courantes

  • Fake taxis at the airport and outside stations that inflate the meter: order via the Bolt app or Főtaxi
  • Hostess-bar scam (trap drinks): women approach you near the Danube and lead you off, the bill explodes
  • Menus with no prices displayed in Pest's tourist areas: ask for the menu with prices before ordering
