Cash vs Carte

Card is king: Estonia is one of the least cash-reliant countries in the world, everything is paid by card or contactless, even a 2 EUR coffee. Keep a bit of cash for rare small markets

Pourboires

Not mandatory, rounding up or +5-10% at restaurants with table service is appreciated

DAB / Distributeurs

ATMs (SEB, Swedbank, LHV) everywhere, free with a eurozone card. Beware of the orange-screen Euronet ATMs (fees and unfavourable rates)

Astuces

  • The dish of the day (päevapraad) at lunch runs around 6-9 EUR, much cheaper than à la carte in the evening
  • Tallinn's public transport is free for residents; for tourists it's 1.50 EUR a ride, next to nothing
  • Everything is paid by card or phone in Estonia, a hyper-digital society: no need to withdraw much cash
  • Drink the tap water, among the cleanest in Europe: skip the 2 EUR bottles
  • Outside Tallinn (Tartu, Pärnu, the islands), prices drop sharply: accommodation and restaurants 20-30% cheaper

Devise : Euro (EUR)

  • Eurozone - no currency exchange needed

Arnaques courantes

  • Hostess bars in Tallinn Old Town (Suur-Karja street): they invite you to drink then hand you a steep bill, avoid the touts
  • Tourist restaurants in the old town: menus without prices or overpriced 'medieval specialities', check the prices beforehand
  • Taxis at the airport or port: some drivers improvise fares, prefer Bolt which shows the price
