Cash vs Carte
Card very well accepted in the south (cities, hotels, restaurants). Bring cash for village tavernas, markets and especially the north of the island.
Pourboires
Not mandatory. A 10% service charge is sometimes already included; otherwise round up or leave 5-10% if satisfied.
DAB / Distributeurs
ATMs everywhere in the south, fee-free with a eurozone card. Rarer in the north.
Astuces
- •Meze (small dishes served in a cascade) is the best value for filling you up: 18-25 EUR per person for a full meal
- •The south is in the eurozone (Republic of Cyprus); the north (Northern Cyprus, under Turkish control) uses the Turkish lira and is markedly cheaper
- •Renting a car splits the cost of journeys among several people: public transport is limited outside the cities
- •Traveling in April-May or October drops accommodation prices by 30-40% compared to July-August
Devise : Euro (EUR)
- •Eurozone in the south: no currency exchange needed for European travelers
- •To cross to the north (Turkish lira), pay in euros or withdraw on the spot; keep cash as few foreign cards work on the Turkish side
- •Avoid currency exchange offices in tourist areas, unfavourable rates
Arnaques courantes
- ⚠'Consumption' bars in Ayia Napa and Limassol: inflated bills, drinks charged at outrageous prices if you invite a hostess
- ⚠Scooter/quad rental with overcharging for pre-existing scratches: photograph the vehicle before you set off
- ⚠'Free' excursions to jewellery or carpet showrooms with pressure to buy
