Cash vs Carte

Neither cash nor card: the country runs on QR-code mobile payment. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with your foreign card before you arrive. Cash is still accepted but you may struggle to get change.

Pourboires

Tipping doesn't exist and isn't expected, neither at restaurants nor in taxis. Don't insist.

DAB / Distributeurs

ATMs everywhere in town (Bank of China, ICBC accept foreign cards). Fees of 15-50 CNY per withdrawal on the Chinese side, plus your bank's fees.

Astuces

•China runs on mobile payment (Alipay and WeChat Pay): link your Visa/Mastercard in the app BEFORE the trip, you'll pay for everything by QR code, from taxis to skewer vendors.
•Eating local is unbeatable: a bowl of noodles or dumplings costs 15-30 CNY (2-4 EUR) at an eatery.
•The high-speed train is cheap for the distance: Beijing-Shanghai (1300 km) costs about 550 CNY (70 EUR) in 2nd class.
•Hostels offer dorms at 50-60 CNY and private rooms at 120-200 CNY.

•Change a little cash at the airport or at a bank (Bank of China) to get by, but 95% of payments are made by phone.
•Keep 200-300 CNY in cash for the rare rural vendors and small temples.

Arnaques courantes

⚠The tea-house scam: friendly fake students invite you to a tea ceremony then present a 2000 CNY bill.
⚠Fake taxis with no meter outside stations and airports: insist on the meter or order via Didi.
⚠Fake QR codes stuck over the real ones: check that the merchant's name shows before confirming a payment.
