Cash vs Carte

Cash (BAM) dominates by far, especially outside the big cities and for small shops, taxis and markets. Card works at hotels and city restaurants.

Pourboires

Not mandatory but appreciated: round up or leave 10% at restaurants.

DAB / Distributeurs

Bankomat ATMs widespread in cities. Some banks apply fixed fees (2-5 BAM); favour the ATMs of major banks (UniCredit, Raiffeisen).

Astuces

  • One of the cheapest countries in Europe: a hearty plate of ćevapi costs 4-6 BAM (2-3 €)
  • The lunch of the day (dnevni meni) at local restaurants is unbeatable: 8-15 BAM
  • Bosnian coffee in the old town costs 1-2 BAM; you can spend hours over it without breaking the bank
  • The intercity buses are cheap: Sarajevo-Mostar works out at ~10-15 BAM

Devise : Convertible mark (BAM)

  • The convertible mark (BAM) is pegged to the euro: ~1.96 BAM to 1 €, a near-immovable rate
  • Change your euros at banks or official bureaux, never on the street
  • Many tourist shops accept the euro, but the rate applied is often worse

Arnaques courantes

  • Meterless taxi drivers in Sarajevo who inflate the price: insist on the meter or negotiate beforehand
  • Fake guides around the Stari Most in Mostar
  • Change sometimes given in euros at an unfavourable rate — prefer BAM
