Cash vs Carte
Cash is king outside the big hotels in Thimphu and Paro. Most shops, taxis and small restaurants take cash only.
Pourboires
Not required but appreciated: budget a tip for the guide (~10-15 USD/day) and the driver (~5-8 USD/day) at the end of the trip.
DAB / Distributeurs
ATMs present in Thimphu, Paro and Phuentsholing, but often temperamental with foreign cards. Withdraw cash on arrival and don't rely on them in rural areas.
Astuces
- •The biggest budget line is NOT accommodation but the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF): 100 USD (~92 EUR) per person per night, mandatory for all foreigners except Indian nationals.
- •Un voyage au Bhoutan doit passer par un tour-operateur agree et un guide accompagnateur : reserve un forfait plutot que d'improviser sur place.
- •Indian citizens pay a reduced SDF (~1200 INR/night): if you go via India, that doesn't lighten anything for a European passport.
- •Bring US dollars in fresh bills to settle the SDF and large payments; the ngultrum is hard to get outside the country.
Devise : Ngultrum (BTN)
- •1 BTN is worth about 0.009 EUR (around 100-103 BTN to 1 EUR in 2025).
- •The ngultrum is pegged 1:1 to the Indian rupee (INR), which is also legal tender in Bhutan.
- •Change your euros/dollars at Paro Airport or at a bank in Thimphu; keep your receipts.
Arnaques courantes
- ⚠Few classic scams: guide-led tourism strongly limits the traps.
- ⚠Verifie que ton tour-operateur est bien licencie par le Department of Tourism (site officiel visitbhutan.com) avant de payer.
- ⚠Some 'craft shops' sell products imported from India or Nepal passed off as Bhutanese: ask about the origin.
