Conseils argent

Cash vs Carte

Cards very well accepted everywhere (malls, hotels, restaurants). Keep a little cash for taxis, the souk and small Indian restaurants

Pourboires

Not required. 10% in restaurants if service isn't included, round up for taxis

DAB / Distributeurs

ATMs everywhere (Benefit, banks). Fees possible on your foreign bank's side, otherwise a reliable local network

Astuces

  • The dinar is one of the strongest currencies in the world (1 BHD is worth more than 2.40 EUR): halve the displayed prices to think in euros, it avoids nasty surprises
  • Eating at Manama's Pakistani/Indian restaurants (thali, biryani) costs 1.5-3 BHD versus 8-15 BHD in the malls
  • Hotels drop in summer (June-September, extreme heat): a 4-star in Seef can fall to 30-40 BHD a night
  • The country is tiny (55 km long): you can do everything from Manama without changing hotels

Devise : Bahraini dinar (BHD)

  • The dinar is pegged to the dollar (1 BHD = 2.652 USD fixed) so very stable, no speculation to fear
  • Change at the airport or the offices in the souk; the rates are fair and there's little difference
  • Withdraw straight from the ATM, card rates are often better than cash

Arnaques courantes

  • Taxi drivers who refuse the meter: insist on the meter or agree the price BEFORE getting in
  • Prices inflated for tourists at the Manama souk: haggling is the norm, aim for 30-50% of the first price
  • Fake guides near the Bahrain Fort offering overpriced tours
