Cash vs Carte

Cards accepted at hotels, shopping centres and restaurants in Baku, but cash is still king outside the capital and for bazaars, taxis and street food.

Pourboires

Not required. 10% in restaurants if service isn't already included, round up for taxis.

DAB / Distributeurs

ATMs everywhere in Baku (Kapital Bank, PASHA Bank, ABB). They dispense AZN, fees of 3-6 AZN frequent. Much rarer in the regions: withdraw before you leave.

Astuces

  • Azerbaijan is very affordable: a full local meal costs 8-15 AZN (4-8 EUR).
  • Street food (qutab, doner) runs 2-5 AZN, perfect for eating for next to nothing.
  • The Baku metro and bus cost 0.50 AZN per trip with the rechargeable BakiKart card.
  • Haggle with street taxis, but prefer Bolt/Uber for fixed, honest fares.

Devise : Azerbaijani manat (AZN)

  • Change at the banks or official offices in central Baku, never on the street.
  • The manat is stably pegged to the dollar, the rate vs the euro moves little (~0.51 EUR to 1 AZN).
  • Keep small bills: many shops and taxis struggle to give change on large notes.

Arnaques courantes

  • Taxis de la vieille ville et de l'aéroport qui gonflent le prix : exige le compteur ou commande via appli.
  • Fake guides in the old town (Icherisheher) who follow you then demand an excessive sum.
  • Exchange offices advertising a good rate but applying a hidden commission.
  • Surfacturation au restaurant : vérifie l'addition, des couverts ou du pain 'offert' sont parfois facturés.
