Cash vs Carte
Contrary to its reputation, Germany has modernised considerably: cards are accepted almost everywhere in cities. But keep some cash for small shops, markets, biergartens and certain restaurants that still refuse cards under 10-20 EUR.
Pourboires
Customary tip: round up or 5-10%. You state the total to the waiter when paying rather than leaving change on the table.
DAB / Distributeurs
Geldautomat ATMs everywhere. Free with a eurozone card at regular banks; avoid independent ATMs like Euronet that charge fees.
Astuces
- •The Deutschlandticket (58 EUR/month in 2025, 63 EUR in 2026) gives unlimited access to all regional and city transport across the country — unbeatable if you move around a lot
- •The Turkish stands (döner, dürüm) and the Wurstbuden offer a hearty meal for 5-8 EUR
- •Berlin's state museums have free days or time slots; many cities have a 'Welcome Card' with transport + discounts
- •Having a coffee at a bäckerei counter costs far less than on a tourist terrace
- •The discount supermarkets (Aldi, Lidl, Netto) are among the cheapest in Europe for stocking up
Devise : Euro (EUR)
- •Eurozone — no currency exchange needed from France
- •Avoid currency exchange offices at stations and airports, with their unfavorable rates
Arnaques courantes
- ⚠Fake inspectors on public transport demanding a cash 'fine' — real ones show official ID and accept payment at the counter
- ⚠Gangs of pickpockets around Alexanderplatz, the Brandenburg Gate and at Oktoberfest
- ⚠Three-card monte (shell game) near tourist sites in Berlin — always rigged
